Waters arrives at the position following a successful tenure overseeing the company's Mid-Market division, which he launched in 2022. Under his guidance, that unit consistently exceeded growth targets while maintaining strict underwriting standards. Lucy Pilko, CEO of AXA XL Americas, cited his ability to build high-performing teams as a primary driver for the promotion, noting the increasing complexity of risks facing the firm’s large-scale clients. Before his time at AXA XL, Waters built a 25-year career at Liberty Mutual, holding senior leadership roles across property and casualty sectors including Energy and Construction.

Matt Waters has been appointed head of the Large Commercial and Specialty business unit at AXA XL, stepping into the role effective immediately. Tasked with overseeing operations across the United States, Canada, and Bermuda, Waters will focus on driving profitable growth and deepening relationships with North American brokers and clients.

While Waters transitions to his new responsibilities, the Mid-Market team will be led by Jim DiVirgilio on an interim basis. DiVirgilio, the company’s recently retired Chief Claims Officer, has returned in an advisory capacity to manage the division while the firm conducts a search for a permanent successor.
