The new lineup features a standard Crispy Chicken Sandwich with pickles and mayo, a Deluxe version with lettuce and tomato, and a limited-time Nashville Hot variety. To encourage trial, the Lexington-based chain is offering a buy-one-get-one-free promotion at participating locations from August 17 through August 23. The move marks a significant pivot for the 1919-founded brand, which spent nearly a decade refining the recipe behind the scenes.
A&W Enters the Chicken Sandwich Wars After Seven Years of Development
Seven years after a viral social media debate transformed the fast-food landscape, A&W Restaurants is finally entering the fray. The chain is challenging loyalists of rival brands to sample its first-ever hand-breaded chicken sandwich, betting that a new recipe can disrupt long-standing allegiances in the competitive quick-service market.

CEO and President Betsy Schmandt stated that while chicken sandwich preferences are notoriously rigid, the company believes its product quality will convert skeptics. Beyond the menu, the brand is gamifying the launch through a digital "Hall of Heroes" on its website, where customers can post a formal loyalty pledge for a chance to have their social media handles featured. With over 900 locations globally, A&W is looking to reclaim its footprint in a sector that has been dominated by intense, high-profile rivalries since 2019.
