ScrubaDub Turns 60 by Betting on People Over Automation

As the third-generation family business marks six decades in the car wash industry, it is bucking the national trend of high turnover. By prioritizing a “Care Like Family” philosophy, the Natick-based firm has secured recent workplace honors from USA TODAY and The Boston Globe while maintaining a 71.7% retention rate.

ScrubaDub’s longevity stems from a commitment to employee development that reaches far beyond standard benefits. With over two-thirds of its management team boasting more than a decade of tenure, the company has transformed from a local operation into a regional leader. This stability is supported by tangible investments, including a 401(k) match, financial coaching, and a scholarship program that has distributed over $135,000 to staff and their families since 2019.

To bridge the gap between traditional manual labor and modern professional growth, the company hired Dr. Sabrina Jacques as Director of Training, Learning and Development. Under her guidance, the firm has funneled over $500,000 into staff training over the past two years, utilizing grants to provide English language instruction and Six Sigma certification for front-line workers. This approach challenges the industry standard of high-churn, low-investment employment models.

Beyond the office, the company maintains a community-focused footprint, donating over $1 million in services and hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations like Community Servings and Cradles to Crayons. As the company prepares for its annual Culture Week starting August 17, leadership asserts that their primary metric for success remains the long-term career growth of their 300-plus employees rather than the volume of vehicles processed.
