ArkBio Advances Influenza Drug AK0406 to Clinical Trials in China

The National Medical Products Administration of China has cleared Shanghai Ark Biopharmaceutical’s IND application for AK0406, marking the country’s first clinical entry for an influenza antiviral drug-Fc conjugate. The long-acting injection aims to provide sustained prophylaxis, potentially overcoming limitations inherent in current seasonal vaccine strategies.

AK0406 functions by pairing a potent antiviral small molecule with an antibody Fc fragment. This design is engineered to offer broad-spectrum protection against both influenza A and B strains. Preclinical testing indicates the drug maintains immune effector function while providing prolonged exposure, a critical factor for both pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. The company is currently moving forward with a parallel development strategy, having already completed the dosing phase for a clinical trial in Australia earlier this year.

By targeting the gaps left by traditional vaccines—specifically issues with antigenic drift and efficacy in vulnerable populations—ArkBio positions the drug as a necessary intervention for peak flu seasons. The developer intends to coordinate with the Center for Drug Evaluation in China to expedite domestic testing alongside the ongoing follow-up work from its Australian phase I study.
