OpenRouter, led by OpenSea co-founder Alex Atallah, serves as a critical infrastructure layer for developers, allowing them to route tasks across various AI models while managing costs and system outages. The platform claims a user base exceeding 10 million, reflecting the rapid surge in demand for tools that streamline enterprise AI adoption.
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) stands to gain roughly $1.5 billion from the deal. The firm secured a stake exceeding 17% with an initial investment of approximately $20 million starting last year. Menlo Ventures, following a similar trajectory, invested less than $50 million during the Series A round to acquire a 6% stake now valued at over $500 million. Other backers include Sequoia Capital, CapitalG, ServiceNow, and Snowflake.
