Kazakhstan Deploys Starlink Direct-to-Cell Service

Kazakhstan has become the first Central Asian nation to implement satellite-to-mobile connectivity, bypassing traditional terrestrial infrastructure through Starlink's Direct to Cell technology. The rollout follows high-level agreements finalized during President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s 2025 visit to the United States, marking a shift in regional digital accessibility.

The service, operated in partnership with Beeline Kazakhstan, allows standard smartphones to function in remote regions where cell towers are absent. By connecting directly to Starlink satellites, users can exchange messages and access specific applications without needing specialized hardware or external antennas. Zhaslan Madiyev, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, confirmed the technology has moved from initial field testing to full user deployment.

For a country with Kazakhstan’s vast, sparsely populated geography, the infrastructure serves as a strategic bridge for communication in areas previously isolated by terrain or damaged networks. Bulat Utemuratov, investor at Verny Capital Group, emphasized that this move aims to remove physical distance as a barrier to modern digital services. Beeline Kazakhstan is currently offering the service at no additional cost during an initial promotional period.
