The Coachella Valley, which accounts for approximately 85% of domestic date production, serves as the hub for this initiative. As consumer interest in smaller, more satisfying portions grows—partly due to the rise of GLP-1 therapies and a broader focus on blood glucose management—the commission is emphasizing the fruit's low glycemic index. Each 40-gram serving provides three grams of dietary fiber alongside seven essential minerals, including potassium and magnesium.
California Dates Targets Times Square for National Awareness Month
A dual-sided digital billboard in New York’s Times Square marks the start of National California Date Month, an October-long campaign by the California Date Commission. The initiative aims to shift the focus toward nutrient-dense snacking through a new nationwide recipe competition dubbed Build a Better Bite.

To bridge the gap between nutrition and daily eating habits, the commission partnered with emergency physician and culinary medicine expert Dr. Sonali Ruder. The collaboration centers on the Power Date Bite framework, which encourages pairing dates with lean proteins and healthy fats to maximize meal satisfaction. Beyond the digital presence in New York, the organization is distributing a digital recipe collection approved by the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Food Hub. Home cooks are invited to participate in the Build a Better Bite contest throughout October and November by submitting original sweet and savory recipes.
