Since its inception in 2012, the collaboration has transformed a 2.3-hectare vineyard into a site of rehabilitation. Inmates nearing the end of their sentences work alongside agronomists to cultivate Vermentino and Ansonica grapes, learning the precise rhythms of the land. According to Frescobaldi, the vineyard offers a stark contrast to the stagnation of prison life, demanding daily attention and fostering a tangible connection to the seasonal cycle.
Marchesi Frescobaldi Unveils 14th Vintage from Gorgona Penal Colony
Lamberto Frescobaldi has officially debuted the 2025 vintage of Gorgona, a wine produced through a unique partnership between his estate and Europe’s last active island penitentiary. The project, now in its fourteenth year, provides inmates with professional viticulture training, aiming to restore a sense of purpose and structure to their lives.
The 2025 vintage reflects the distinct terroir of the island, a natural amphitheater defined by iron-rich soil and constant maritime influence. The wine features notes of Mediterranean macchia, chamomile, and citrus, with a salinity that mirrors its coastal origins. With a limited annual production of 9,000 bottles, the project serves as both a high-end viticultural endeavor and a social initiative. The label for this release, designed by Simonetta Doni, draws inspiration from the myth of Venus and the creation of the Tuscan Archipelago, further grounding the wine in the local history of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
