The American Book of Fables Taps Into National Milestone

With over 10,000 copies sold in its first 20 days, The American Book of Fables has emerged as a sleeper hit ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The 396-page volume uses watercolor, ink, and oil illustrations to guide readers through American geography while exploring core themes of resilience and civic history.

Written by Matthew Mehan and illustrated by John Folley, the work aims to bridge generational gaps by offering content tailored for "Littles," "Middles," and "Bigs." The narrative follows a central character named Hugh Manatee—a play on the word humanity—who encounters various friends while traversing landscapes ranging from the Florida Everglades to the peaks of Glacier National Park. The cover features a 1975 Ford F-250, serving as a subtle visual reference to the upcoming semi-quincentennial.

Charlie McKinney, president of Sophia Institute Press, attributes the early sales momentum to a growing public appetite for storytelling that honors American traditions and regional diversity. Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the project incorporates historical letters and poems alongside original fables. Beyond the text, the book concludes with a "Seek and Find" feature, prompting younger readers to revisit the detailed artwork. The title is currently available through major retailers including Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and independent booksellers.
