Most Travelers Misunderstand eSIM Capabilities Ahead of World Cup

A staggering 68% of international travelers incorrectly assume that all eSIM products support traditional voice calls and SMS. This widespread misconception poses a significant hurdle for football fans planning to visit North America for the World Cup, as many rely on data-only services that lack standard telephony features.

The research, commissioned by eSIM.net, surveyed 2,000 football fans and revealed a critical gap in consumer knowledge regarding mobile connectivity. While 82% of respondents intend to deactivate their primary SIM cards to dodge steep roaming charges, they remain anxious about the limitations of data-only alternatives. The inability to receive SMS-based banking authentication codes tops the list of user concerns at 41%, followed by worries regarding healthcare communications, local service access, and basic travel logistics.

According to Gerry O'Prey, CEO of eSIM.net, the rapid adoption of eSIM technology has outpaced user education. Although travelers are eager to minimize costs, many fail to distinguish between internet-based communication and full-service mobile plans. To address these connectivity gaps, the company has partnered with European mobile operators to bundle data, voice, and SMS into unified packages, ensuring fans remain reachable through traditional channels while abroad.
