Aareal Bank Taps Wells Fargo Veteran to Lead U.S. Real Estate Shift

Caroline Mahl Patel will take the helm of Aareal Capital Corporation this August, marking a key leadership transition as the German lender pivots its North American portfolio away from office assets toward high-end hospitality and residential financing in a long-term strategic realignment.

Mahl Patel joins the New York-based subsidiary on June 15, 2026, and will officially step into the dual role of CEO and Head of Origination on August 1. Her arrival signals a move to tighten the bank’s focus on specialized asset classes after two decades of activity in the region. She brings over 20 years of commercial real estate experience to the firm, having most recently served as a managing director at Wells Fargo, where she oversaw portfolio management and underwriting for specialty sectors.

Christof Winkelmann, the bank’s chief market officer, pointed to Mahl Patel’s track record in hospitality as the primary driver for the hire. The bank aims to leverage her expertise to refine its U.S. exposure, which is currently undergoing a deliberate reduction in traditional office lending.

Michael Dalton, who currently leads the New York operations, will remain with the organization. Starting July 1, he will transition to the role of Chief Risk Officer for ACC, shifting his focus toward the management and resolution of distressed loans. This internal realignment is designed to support the broader "Aareal Ambition" strategy, which prioritizes a more selective, risk-adjusted approach to property financing across major metropolitan markets.
