W Social: The European bid to build a human-only alternative to X

“We are giving away our data, our revenue, and our attention to foreign companies that give us, in return, content, but also disinformation.” With this promise of digital sovereignty, the new platform W Social launched its beta version this week, backed by 80 European investors and 55,000 initial users.

W Social: The European bid to build a human-only alternative to X

The platform, unveiled in Brussels by founders Anna Zeiter and Ingmar Rentzhog, aims to replicate the utility of X while purging the ecosystem of bots. The core mechanism is a strict verification gate: to like, post, or interact, users must prove they are human and over 18. This identity check is offloaded to an independent service that immediately purges personal data, a design choice intended to satisfy European privacy standards. The interface remains familiar, offering a feed that can be filtered by geography or specific topics, prioritizing content with high engagement levels.

Moderation remains the most significant hurdle for the startup. While the founders emphasize their commitment to EU digital regulations and plan to employ a mix of human moderators and AI tools, they stop short of acting as arbiters of truth. Rentzhog explicitly welcomes dissenting voices, including those who deny climate science, positioning the platform as a space for debate rather than a police force for facts. Success depends on whether W can mirror the scale of regional giants like China’s Weibo or Russia’s VK. With the new “Trusted European Platforms” label recently introduced by the Europe MediaLab, W faces a high bar: it must prove that its commitment to transparency and data protection can actually sustain a viable audience and attract the advertisers necessary to challenge the status quo.
