Salt Lake City’s Other Side Village Completes First Phase of Tiny Homes

Salt Lake City marked a milestone in local housing efforts today as Hamlet Homes delivered the final two units of The Other Side Village. The completion of these homes concludes the community's 60-unit first phase, providing a permanent foundation for formerly homeless residents to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the workforce.

The project represents a shift from temporary emergency shelters to a model focused on long-term stability and personal growth. Beyond providing physical shelter, the village serves as a hub for employment and social connection, featuring resident-staffed businesses such as The Other Side Donuts. Hamlet Homes, which has partnered with the nonprofit HomeAid Utah for seven years, underscored its commitment by fully furnishing the final two units with donated household goods ranging from kitchenware to electronics.

Preston Cochrane, CEO of The Other Side Village, emphasized that the community’s design is rooted in the belief that residents require opportunity and purpose rather than mere rescue. The village, which eventually aims to house 456 people, encourages residents to reconnect with family and pursue stable employment. For the builders and organizers involved, today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony serves as both a celebration of the completed construction and a reaffirmation of the project's goal to treat homelessness as a challenge of community and belonging.
