Developed by the American Battlefield Trust in partnership with Interactive Knowledge and state agencies, the digital portal uses multimedia maps and photography to guide users through three distinct periods: the Revolutionary struggle, the era of early statehood, and the internal divisions of the Civil War. These units aim to move history beyond textbooks by highlighting specific geographic locations that visitors can explore in person.
North Carolina Deploys Interactive History Kiosks at State Welcome Centers
Travelers pulling into the I-77 South Carolina Welcome Center now encounter the North Carolina History Explorer, an interactive kiosk designed to map the state’s most turbulent eras. The installation marks the beginning of a statewide rollout intended to turn transit hubs into gateways for exploring Revolutionary and Civil War sites.

American Battlefield Trust President David Duncan noted that these kiosks serve as a catalyst for heritage tourism, encouraging travelers to visit the actual sites where formative national conflicts unfolded. Following a successful pilot program at the state legislative building in April, the initiative is expanding to every official welcome center in North Carolina. Ansley Herring Wegner, director of America 250 NC, stated that the project provides a tangible way for both residents and tourists to engage with the state's contributions to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
